Analysis

Total drink: ~160g (after shaking; 2 oz tequila, ½ oz orange liqueur, 1 oz lime, ½ oz agave)

Component Amount % of drink
Alcohol (ethanol) ~24g 15.0%
Sugar ~15g 9.4%
Water + dilution ~121g 75.6%

A sour built on tequila — ~15% ABV finished and noticeably sweet at ~9%. The agave syrup plus the orange liqueur’s own sugar stack up, which is why a margarita reads richer than a whiskey sour despite similar structure. Shaking adds ~40g dilution; the lime keeps it from cloying. Drop the agave and it swings tart and lean (a Tommy’s-style).

Notes

  • Use 100% blue agave tequila. If the label doesn’t say this, it’s mixto.
  • Fresh lime juice only — never premade sour mix.
  • The agave syrup version (Tommy’s Margarita style) is a common substitute for orange liqueur-heavy versions.
