Analysis

Total drink: ~109g (after stirring; 2 oz rye at 43% ABV, 1 oz sweet vermouth at ~16%)

Component Amount % of drink
Alcohol (ethanol) 24g 22.0%
Sugar (from vermouth) 5g 4.6%
Water + dilution 80g 73.4%

A spirit-forward stirred drink — roughly 28% ABV finished, and essentially dry at ~5% sugar. The 2:1 rye:vermouth ratio does almost all the work; the ~22g of stirring dilution (about 20% of the glass) is what pulls a harsh 43% pour down to a silky ~28% and rounds the edges. Nearly all the sweetness rides in on the vermouth, not added sugar — swap to a drier vermouth and it reads sharper.

Notes

  • This is a stirred drink, not shaken. Stirring keeps it silky and clear.
  • The 2:1 spirit-to-vermouth ratio has been standard since the 1880s.
  • Rye is spicier and drier; bourbon is sweeter and rounder. Both work — use what you like.
  • Sweet vermouth contributes roughly 4.5g sugar per ounce — essentially replacing the sugar cube in an Old Fashioned.
