P Bass Foam Mute
A foam mute under the strings near the bridge shortens sustain and kills overtones. The result is a rounder, thumpier note with faster decay — closer to an upright bass than a ringing electric. This is the sound of Motown (James Jamerson), ’60s session work (Carol Kaye), and a lot of classic Latin and jazz recordings where the bass needs to stay out of the way of horns and piano.
Leo Fender knew this. Early Precision basses shipped with a foam pad glued to the underside of the chrome bridge cover. When players removed the cover (because it got in the way of palm muting), they lost the foam too. The DIY sponge mute brings it back.
What It Does to the Sound
- Shortens decay. Notes die faster — more “thump” than “boooom.” This is what makes it sit like an upright in a mix.
- Cuts high overtones. The attack stays but the ring disappears. Less string noise, less clank.
- Adds fundamental. With overtones damped, the fundamental frequency dominates. The note sounds fatter and more defined in the low end.
- Reduces sustain unevenly. Thinner strings (G, D) get muted more than thicker ones (E, A) unless you angle the foam.
Materials
You want something soft enough to contact the strings without buzzing, dense enough to actually damp them, and cheap enough to experiment with.

For jazz and salsa, you want medium muting — enough decay reduction to approximate upright, but not so dead that you lose articulation. A microfiber car sponge or medium-density foam is the sweet spot.
How to Make It
What you need
- A microfiber car wash sponge (or any medium-density foam)
- Scissors or a utility knife
- Your bass
Cut the foam
Cut a rectangular piece roughly:
- Length: width of your strings at the bridge + 1.5cm overhang on each side (~10cm for a P bass)
- Width: 2.5cm (1 inch)
- Height: start at 1.5cm, trim down from there
The height is the critical dimension. Too tall = strings buzz against the foam and go dead. Too short = barely any muting. You want the foam to lightly press against the underside of the strings without deflecting them visibly.
Place it
Slide the foam under all four strings, positioned just in front of the bridge saddles (between the saddles and the pickup). The closer to the bridge, the more it mutes. The closer to the pickup, the less effect.
Angle it: tilt the foam so the G-string end is slightly closer to the bridge than the E-string end. This compensates for the thinner strings being easier to mute — keeps the damping roughly even across all four strings.
Dial it in
- More muting: push foam closer to bridge, use taller/denser foam
- Less muting: pull foam toward pickup, trim height, use softer material
- Dead thump (Motown): foam right at the saddles, 2cm tall, dense weatherstrip
- Upright-ish (jazz/Latin): foam 1–2cm in front of saddles, 1–1.5cm tall, medium sponge
Above vs. Below the Strings
Two schools:
Below (Jamerson style): Foam wedged under the strings, pressing up against them. This is the most common DIY approach. Easy to install and remove. Slightly changes string height if the foam is too tall.
Above (Carol Kaye style): Felt or foam taped to the top of the strings near the bridge (originally glued to the underside of the bridge cover). Kaye preferred this because it doesn’t affect string height or intonation. Use double-stick tape or gaffer tape to hold felt in place.
Both work. Below is easier to experiment with. Above is more stable for gigging.
For Jazz and Salsa Specifically
The goal isn’t full Motown dead-thump. You want:
- Enough sustain to play walking lines without every note dying before the next one
- Short enough decay that notes don’t pile up and muddy the low end
- A round, woody fundamental that sits under piano comping and horn lines
Start with: medium-density foam, 1.5cm tall, positioned 1–2cm in front of the bridge saddles. Play a walking line and listen for whether notes sustain long enough to connect but short enough to stay clean.
Combine with: flatwound strings (Thomastik Jazz Flats, La Bella Deep Talkin’) for maximum upright approximation. Rounds with a mute still sound more electric — the mute kills sustain but flats kill the metallic overtones.
Plucking position matters too. Play closer to the neck (over the pickup or even over the fretboard) for a rounder tone. The mute handles decay; your plucking position handles timbre.
